Artist JGH Bio

“There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.” Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)

John G. Heinrichs, ACI, is a Southern California artist who enjoys transforming “a yellow spot into the sun.” His favorite painting techniques involve the play of light and shadows, light and dark, the thrill of the ideal contrast in making a painting that is pleasing to the viewer’s eye.  In addition, his longtime passions of the desert, the mountains and the sea, take him on thrilling journeys to tell visual stories with his paintings.

John began his fine arts career late in life to fulfill his desire to express his innate creativity. Upon completion of his first oil painting, John discovered difficulty in using the brush to sign his name so he devised an acronym using his initials, thus becoming Artist JGH.  He later invented a signature logo which he copyrighted just prior to his debut in 1999. His ability to sign his signature to a painting has long since improved.

John paints scenes familiar to him from the days of his youth when he was an active backpacker. He also draws inspiration from his travels around the country and other sources. Specializing in landscape paintings, some of his works of art are fictitious with elements of “truth”, some are from completely from an envisioned scene in the artist’s mind, and others are based on recollections of actual locations John has visited.

Painting in oils, acrylics and sometimes in transparent watermedia, John’s work can be described as colorful, passionate, mainly realistic, in a painterly style. He is a self-taught artist who pursues his craft through workshops and personal training from nationally known artists. John was a Gallery Artist with the Cottage Gallery, which was located in Historic Old Town San Diego, and was a juried exhibitor with the San Diego County Art Mart Association. John has also been a juried exhibitor for the Annual Circle of Art Show held in Borrego Springs, CA, (2003, 2004 and 2007) on the last weekend of March, each year.  He is also a member of the Temecula Valley Art League.

For workshops and painting lessons, see our educational web site at Heinrichs Art Studio.  John is a certified instructor with Alexander Art.
